Giant Pac-Man on Highway 55 in Buffalo Draws Attention

Source: KRWC Radio

Most people are finding some guarded humor with the giant Pac-Man which was painted on Highway 55 east of Buffalo in recent weeks. Drivers have become used to seeing the large white dots painted on a section of the highway this summer. They're designed to give motorists an idea of how much room is really needed to safely follow cars in traffic, and to deter drivers from tailgating. Officials say the oversized Pac-Man, the 80's video game icon which gobbled up white dots has been on the highway for about a month, and the artist or artists behind it have been back to touch it up at least once.

Traffic engineer Tom Dumont of the Minnesota Department of Transportation isn't happy about the addition to the 15-thousand-dollar project. He says it just encourages others to try to paint something clever on a very busy, high-speed highway. Dumont concedes however that it is drawing attention to the traffic safety project. The dots project, initiated by Safe Communities of Wright County, reminds drivers to leave two dots between cars to maintain a safe following distance.
